The present invention relates to a method of metal recovery from metal-containing leaching liquor comprising by-product of the leaching process, and a metal recovery apparatus for such a method.
In the process of mining metals such as copper, silver and the like from ore such as sulfide ores and the like, there is usually produced as a by-product of the leaching process a leaching liquor comprising by-products of the leaching process such as fermentation liquor (or, commonly referred to as black liquor) which has been used as a source of chemical energy for the leaching process, and chemical products of the leaching process such as acids such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid or the like, and several metal values such as copper, zinc, lead, cadmium and the like. As can be appreciated, the metal values in the leaching liquor are valuable. As a result, however, there are often difficulties in disposing of the leaching liquor without significant loss of the valuable metals. However, there are also significant technical difficulties in recovering the valuable metals from such leaching liquor because the leaching liquor usually comprises the above mentioned many different chemical compounds which often comprise mixed chemical compounds wherein the valuable metal may be included as a component and/or an impurity. As a result, the leaching liquor usually comprises primarily the mixture of sulfate salts.
2. Description of the Related Art
In the prior art, therefore, there has been a need for a method of recovering the valuable metals from the leaching liquor. Also, there has been a need for an effective apparatus for such a method. To solve the above mentioned problems, there have been known some methods in the prior art. One example of these known methods is disclosed in Japanese Patent Publication No. 32954/86. According to this example, the solution of an aqueous alkali compound is prepared as a solution containing the metal of the metal values to be recovered, and the solution is contacted with an iron compound, to precipitate the iron as an iron hydroxide. The metal values are then recovered from the solution. Although this example is effective in some sense, it still has problems. For instance, the iron hydroxide separated from the solution may be re-dissolved in the solution when the solution is returned to the leaching process.
