Based on these results, they concluded that insulin resistance plays an important role in the pathogenesis of NASH [[@B7]].
In a study by Kim et al., patients with NAFLD were divided into NASH and non-NASH groups. The NASH group showed significantly lower insulin sensitivity and higher HOMA-IR compared with the non-NASH group. HOMA-IR correlated with degree of hepatic steatosis, serum levels of AST and ALT, and echogenicity of liver [[@B8]].
Jyung et al. reported that the insulin resistance index, HOMA-IR, was significantly higher in NASH patients than in simple steatosis patients [[@B9]]. There was no significant difference in insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion between simple steatosis and NASH. They concluded that insulin resistance is a major pathogenic factor in the development of NASH.
In the present study, HOMA-IR was significantly higher in patients with NASH than in those with simple steatosis. HOMA-IR did not differ significantly between the simple steatosis and normal groups. HOMA-IR correlated with the degree of hepatic steatosis, ALT, and the lipid profile. Therefore, HOMA-IR may be a useful indicator of insulin resistance in patients with NAFLD. However, HOMA-IR did not correlate with histological severity of steatosis.
